• As a step to the synthesis & of α-sorigenin (I), the author obtained 5, 7-dimethoxy-keto-1, 2, 3, 4-tetrahy-dro-naphthoic acid (XXI) starting from 3, 5-dihydroxybenzoic acid (XI) via (3, 5-dimethoxybenzyl) -succinic acid (XIX) (Chart 2). α-Keto-β-(4, 6-dimethoxy-2-methyl-benzoyl)-butyrolactone (X) was also synthesized from orcinol (Chart 1). However, the conversion from X to monomethyl α-sorigenin was failed.
