This experiment was carried out to clarify the effects of the various low temperature treatments on flower forcing of the tulip bulbs for export to the United States requiring shipment for 4-6 weeks. The low temperature treatments for 8 weeks were most effective to promote the flowering time and 6 weeks treatments were fairly effective, but the treatments for 5 weeks were comparatively ineffective. The most effective of the 8 weeks treatments was at 4°C for 2-3 weeks, 2°C for 5-3 weeks, then at 4°C for 1-2 weeks. In the case of the 6 weeks treat-ments, at 4°C. for 2-3 weeks, then at 2°C for 4-3 weeks was most successful. The cooling starting at the stage of flower-bud differentiation was best to promote the flowering-time, but when the cooling started later than the time of flower-bud differentiation, or was interrupt-ed, the flowering-time was much delayed. The bulbs which were planted after preservation at room temperature for 4-6 weeks following the treatments bloomed rather earlier than the bulbs planted immediately after treatments. The bulbs treated for 8 weeks starting on July 20th bloomed at the latter part of December in “Themis”, from early January in “Feu Brilliant, ” and at the latter part of January in “William Pitt” The bulbs treated for 6 weeks, then stored at room temperature, bloomed from the early part of January to February. It is suggested that the former case may be expected in the West of U.S.A., and the latter may be in the East.
