Expression of sugar chain antigen CA15-3 (DF3) in extramammary Paget's disease tumor cells.

Recently most of the clinically important tumor markers have been revealed specific for glycoconjugates. The structure of glycoconjugates is further classified into peripheral, backbone and core ones. The epitope of CA15-3 is thought to be mucinous material composed of glycosylated approximately 20 amino acids. We examined CA15-3 expression on tumor cells of extramammary Paget's disease. Immunohistochemical study with DF3 antibody was performed against specimens of 7 cases we had treated for 4 years. Six cases (86%) were strongly positive and 1 case (14%) was weakly. Five cases (71%) were positive not only on the membrane, but also in the cytoplasm of tumor cells. CA15-3 is as useful a tumor marker for extramammary Paget's disease as for breast carcinoma. The physiological role of CA15-3 in vivo, for example, its ligand, is to be elicited in the near future.
