Measurements of immunoreactive somatostatin (IRS) and gastrin (IRG) contents in the mucosa of the gastric body and antrum were performed in the same biopsy specimen from pernicious anemia cases (PA cases) and the contents of IRS and IRG were compared with those from gastric ulcer and doudenal ulcer cases (PU cases). The IRS and IRG contents in antral mucosa of PA cases with hypergastrinemia were higher than those of PU cases, respectively. There was, however, no correlation between the contents of IRS and IRG in the PA cases. The rato of IRG against IRS was evidently higher in the PA cases. On the other hand, the contents of IRS and IRG in antral mucosa in PA cases without hypergastrinemia due to atrophy of antral mucosa was the same as compared with those in PU cases. In PA cases of both types, IRG could be detected even in the gastric body where no G-cells are ordinarily recognized. Furthermore, in spite of sever atrophy of fundic gland, the content of IRS in the gastric body demonstrated not to decrease. It was speculate that the secretion of somatostatin from antral mucosa in PA cases showing both hypergastrinemia and anacidity was accelerated by gastrin and inhibited by anacidity.
