To elucidate the effect of hyperdynamic systemic circulation in cirrhotics, systemic hemodynamics and oxygen transport and consumption were investiaged in 127 cirrhotic patients.Oxygen transport and consumption were maintained in patients with mildly deteriorated liver function. In patients with severely deteriorated liver function and hyperdynamic systemic circulation, oxygen consumption was also maintained by increased oxygen delivery. On the other hand, in patients with severely deteriorated liver function and normodynamic systemic circulation, oxygen consumption was significantly decreased comparing with that in control (p<0.02).These results suggest that hyperdynamic systemic circulation in cirrhotic patients has a compensative effect on oxygen trnsport and consumption.We concluded that hyperdynamic systemic circulation in cirrhotic patients was followed by maintaining oxygen consumption, and seemed to have a compensative effect on the deterioration of oxygen transport and consumption.
