Epidemiological studies of HB virus infection, (serum HBsAg and anti-HBsAb detection) were carried out on 15, 600 patients at the Kanazawa Medical University who came from two different areas, Kahoku Lake area and non-Kahoku Lake area in Ishikawa prefecture. The study showed that HBsAg positive rate in Kahoku Lake area was clearly higher than that in non-Kahoku Lake area. Especially the positive rate in the older area of Uchinada-machi which is the main part of Kahoku Lake area was very high (7.3%). Anti-HBsAb positive rate and HB virus infection rate in the older area of Uchinada-machi were 22.2% and 29.5%, respectively. These values were significantly higher than those in the newly developed area of Uchinadamachi not included in Kahoku Lake area and those in the other parts of Ishikawa prefecture. These results suggest that the older area of Uchinada-machi is one of the most heavily HB virus infected areas in Japan. And high positive rate of HBsAg in this area may result in an increase of liability to HB virus infection and to becoming HBsAg carriers.
