By the method of a dozen biopsy, the reseach on intestinal metaplasia observed in chronic gastritis was carried out.From the result of this examination it is found that intestinal metaplasia appears and becomes severe in parallel with the degree of atrophic gastritis.It is also observed that the ratio of area of goblet cells to all intestinal metaplasia tends to be lower in persons over 60 years old than in ones under 59 years old. It has a tendency of decreasing apparently in the cases with superficial inflammatory changes. This fact shows that goblet cells may secrete mucus under superficial inflammation. From above results, it is considered that there is lowering of a phase of gastric secretory function in persons over 60 years old.
