Abstract For immobile patients, pressure sores are one of the most severe diseases. However, it is not clear full mechanism to cause pressure sores. In this study, we examined skin surface temperature(SST)under pressure loading and relief by animal experiments, and discussed what the influence of ambient temperature on the SST of compressed area. Materials were rabbits whose ears were compressed pressure of 40kPa over 2 times. As the ambient temperature was controlled constantly in the range of 20.0-30.0°C, the SST was determined by a thermocouple. Results showed that the SST of the ischemic area was changed due to the different mean ambient temperature under the same pressure loading and relief. The SST of the compressed area rose in initial 30 minutes under the pressure loading, after that, there were different temperature changed patterns according to the ambient temperature. We suggested that there was no blood flow on the compressed area, however there was the blood flow on a close compressed area, and the SST of the compressed area rose by heat conduction from the close compressed area. It is necessary to prevent pressure sores are to analyze not only the pressure relief but also physiological factors including SST.
