One of the major problems of development and improvement of artificial organs is the reduction of blood cell damage. Physical forces, particulary shear rate, are believed to be a major factor to cause hemolysis. However, the high levels of shear stress, blood temperature, blood pressure, and other hydrodynamic effects have been shown to cause hemolysis. A series of studies has been made on blood damage in a rotational viscometer under t he several temperature and pressure levels. In the experiments, bovine blood has been used with anticoagulant. The results show that extensive hemolysis is directly due to shear stress, and the various secondary effects become important factor to cause hemolysis under the high shear rate. In conclusion, we considered that it is possible to reduce the hemolysis when we could know the levels of the physical forces in side of the artificial organs using computer analysis or the other flow visualization methods.
