It is generally accepted that Natural Killer cell (NK cell) activity is capable of killing a nonspecific variety of virus-infected or tumorderived target cells. Based on this idea, the present study examined the relationship between NK cell activity and asbestos. NK cell activity in normal healthy subjects did not differ significantly among various sex and age subgroups.Serum interferon (IFN) did not have a normal distribution among these subjects, and 95 percentile confidential range of median had 5-19 IU/ml. IFN is known to regulate NK cell activity in normal people. When sera of asbestosis patients was added to NK cells, their activity accelerated to a level comparable with the sera of healthy subjects. There were higher IFNs in the sera of asbestosis patients, and lower IFNs in those of healthy subjects. If NK cells were exposed to asbestos, chrysotile (UICC standard sample) suppressed NK cell activity, but crocidolite (UICC standard sample) did not. Nor was there any influence shown by fiber in terms of differences in length.
