Patient: aged 52, farmer. He complained of dysphagia and slight pain irradiating to the back since 3 months. Dysphagia was so marked as to interfere with the taking of liquid food.
These symptoms resembled that of esophageal cancer, but there was esophagoscopically found at 25 cm. from the incisors a stricture and superficial ulceration, which bleeded easily and was covered with a thin layer of dirty pseudomembrane.
Removed specimen pieces of tissue showed thickened intima, infiltration of round and plasma cells and regeneration of the mucous menbrane. Serologic test was strongly positive for syphilis. Antisyphilitic treatment meliorated the subjective and objective symptoms, but moderate stricture still persisted after 2 months.
