Determination of small amounts of aluminum in tin- and lead-alloys is tedious and time-consuming. Experiments have been carried out to simplify and speed up this determination, and a recommended procedure has now been established. The variables -such as volume of solution, time of heating, temperature of heating, amount of acid, and effect of sulfate-in color development using the aluminon method with thioglycolic acid as masking agent were investigated. Tin (together with antimony and arsenic) in the sample is volatilized off by dropping hydrobromic acid into a sulfuric acid solution at 200220°C as described in the preceding report. The lead is filtered off as sulfate, and other interfering metals are removed by mercury cathode electrolysis.
