Indium in hydrochloric acid solution forms an orange colored precipitate, [Co(NH3)6] [InCl6], by reaction with hexamminecobalt (III) chloride. The precipitate is insoluble in dilute hydrochloric acid or alcohol, while it is soluble in hot water, giving an orange coloration due to the presence of hexamminecobalt (III) ion. The precipitate is washed with alcohol and dissolved in hot water to give a solution containing chloride ion in stoichiometric amount. By utilizing these properties of the precipitate, both indirect colorimetric determination and argentometric titration of 0.270 mg indium were carried out. In the latter case, disturbances of the method caused by the presence of Al, Fe, Zn, Cd, Hg, Ag, Tl, and Pb were examined. Also, a radiometric determination of less than 50 γ indium was investigated by the use of active precipitant tagged with Co60.
