Gravimetric method, as a most reliable means, is used at present for the determination of sulfate radical in underground waters. However, this method has a defect of requiring too much time and labor for its concentration and separation, and this is an obstacle for handling of large numbers of sample at a time. In order to facilitate the above procedure, a new method of using anion exchanger has been investigated. The procedure is carried out as follows : The sample water is made weak acid with HCl, passed through a column of Amberlite IR-4B (Cl-type) for adsorption of the sulfate radical, by which the sulfate radical is separated from Fe, Al, SiO2 and larger parts of H3PO4, the sulfate radical is liberated by aqueous ammonia and it is estimated by gravimetric method as BaSO4. While it required 2 days for concentration and removing of disturbing ions by the usual method, this method can be finished in 3 hours.
