In quantitative spectrographic analysis, the selection of line-pairs is very important However, fundamental and systematic investigations on the subjects of this problem have not yet been made exhaustively. The author has carried out the fundamental investigations on this problem concerning the quantitative spectrogaphic analysis of steel, and clarified the physical properties of many spectral lines, which have been used up to this time. Several important fundamental items in seleting line-pairs and several important physical phenomena in Feussner spark were obtained. The results are summarized as follows:
(1) Physical properties of many spectral lines have been clarified and many line-pairs have been classified according to their physical properties.
(2) Under the different experimental conditions, the relative intensities of line-pairs change with their physical properties.
(3) As for the line-pairs of group I (each spectral line is ion-line), the following simple experimental equation has been derived.
log IrA/IrB = aΔE + b
IrA = relative intensity.(condition A)
IrB = relative intensity. (condition B)
Delta;E=difference of excitation potential.
a, b = experimental constant.
This equation is applicable in practice.
(4) In general, the line-pair is to be considered as the desirable one, if Delta;E is small.
(5) It seems to be reasonable that the thermal equilibrium is not maintained in the Feussner-spark.
(6) Even in the Feussner-spark, the self-absorption of spectral lines, especially that of resonance lines as well as its influence on the quantitative spectrographic analysis are recognized.
(7) The most important conditions to be considered in selecting line-pairs in Feussner-spark excitation are as follows:
a) the line-pair is the one which belongs to group I and whose Delta;E is small.
b) Each spectral line is not resonance line.
c) Difference of the intensities between two spectral lines is small.
