Chalk made of CaSO4·2H2O was analyzed by a thermomechanical analysis (TMA) apparatus. The TMA curve clearly showed, after a slight thermal expansion, two-step contraction below <I>ca</I>. 250°C which corresponds to the dehydration of crystalline water, and a large contraction in a range of 310500 °C. When the sample was placed under loads of 0.1, 2, 10 and 100 grams, the TMA curves showed negligible change as a whole, but the load of 100 grams causes relatively large contraction. In micro-DTA, the small exothermic peak in the range of 330505°C is likely to be overlooked, because of the very large two-step endothermic peaks of the dehydration of the crystalline water. However, in TMA, the transition can be detected clearly and easily.
