Thermomechanical analysis(TMA) apparatus has been a powerful tool to study clay-minerals, though differential thermal analysis(DTA) and thermogravimetry(TG) have been mainly used. The dimensional changes of a sample, placed under a certain load and heated at a constant rate, are detected in TMA. TMA detects phase changes even when the heat change is small and when there is only small or no weight loss. It is expected that thermal characteristics of clay-minerals can be easily studied, if it is possible to obtain DTA and TMA data simultaneously. We have constructed a simple simultaneous TMA-DTA recording apparatus which consists of a commercial TMA apparatus and attached differential thermocouples. Kaolinite(Montana) and montmorillonite (Mississippi) were tested under heating up to 1000°C at 10°C/min. This apparatus has proved to be capable of providing useful information in analysis of clay-minerals, through recording of simultaneous TMA and DTA curves.
