Small amounts of boron in magnesia clinker from sea water and magnesite is determined by a spectrochemical technique using a graphite electrode.<BR>A magnesia clinker sample is pulverized to fine powder, and the powder (2g) is mixed homogeneously either with graphite powder (1.5 g), barium fluoride (0.5 g) as a carrier and potassium bichromate (0.2 g) as an internal standard, or with graphite powder (2g), barium fluoride (2 g) and zirconium oxide (3g). An aliquot of the powder thus obtained is subjected to the spectrochemical determination of small amounts of boron by d.c. arc discharge (20amp, analytical gap 4 mm, pre-arc time 30 sec and exposure time 30 sec).<BR>The standard samples for making the working curve are prepared by the addition of an boric acid solution in pure magnesium oxide powder (no detectable boron). The working curve is an almost straight line in the boron range 10 ppm to 100 ppm, and the coefficients of variation for the determination are within 9%. The proposed method is very useful for the identification of the kind of magnesia clinker and for the control analysis of the products.
