The solid support in gas chromatographic column packing acts, in some cases, as a catalyzer on the decomposition of the liquid phase in it. The phenomenon was seen when polyethylene glycol impregnated on the solid support is heated in the air, in preparing the packing. The authors investigated the conditions for decomposition of polyethylene glycol/Shimalite (a kind of kieseguhr-firebrick) and presented some devices for its prevention.<BR>It was found that Shimalite acted as a catalyzer and the oxygen in air took a part in the decomposition. The decomposition was prevented, by putting a thin film of silicone oil DC 703 or that of squalane between solid support and polyethylene glycol. A stable column-packing was also obtained when the packing was heated in a reduced pressure or in a stream of nitrogen.
