The separation of berberine and strychnine was attempted by using a weakly acid cation exchanger. By comparing the separability of berberine and strychnine on each of the resin forms, R-COOH, R-COONa and R-COONH4, the form R-COONH4 was found to be the most suitable for the purpose.<BR>After the alkaloids were absorbed by passing a mixture of strychnine nitrate and berberine hydrochloride (each 2050mg) through a column of Duolite CS-101 (R-COONH4), the column was washed with a small quantity of water, and strychnine only was eluted with NH4Cl (1<I>N</I>).<BR>After that, berberine was eluted with Na2CO3 (1<I>N</I>). The separation was complete and quantitative.<BR>Berberine and brucine were also separated by the similar means with good results.
