A thermographic method was proposed for the rapid determination of carbon or cokes deposited on the used solid catalysts. <BR>The catalytic disproportionation of toluene at 600°C under 1 atm gave the samples of silica-alumina containing different amounts of deposited cokes. Mixtures of 110 mg of these catalysts and 110 mg of cupric oxide were analysed by a conventional DTA apparatus under heating rate of 5°C/min. The contents of cokes were determined from areas of exothermic peaks on the thermograms based on the combustion of cokes. <BR>The standard calibration curve was prepared on artificial mixtures of carbon black and fresh silica-alumina catalyst. <BR>The amounts of cokes deposited on the catalysts can be calculated by the equation <I>a</I>∫<SUP>m</SUP><SUB>0</SUB>(<I>b</I>-<I>x</I>)<I>dm</I> (<I>a</I>=6 or 5) in which <I>b</I> and <I>x</I> represent conversions of toluene to benzene and to xylenes, respectively, and <I>m</I> represents cumulative feeds of toluene in moles. <BR>The coke contents in the used catalysts were determined rapidly within 0.4% of absolute standard error.
