It would be very convenient if a milliammeter can be used instead of an electrometer or a galvanometer for spectrometric microphotometer. As such combination is not yet known to exist, the authors modified the light accepting compartment of Shimadzu microphotometer to serve for galvanometer-lamp-scale system by attaching a photomultiplier and a milliammeter. Usually in determining the ratio of light intensities with a microphotorneter, the ratio of the galvanometer deflection by the base metal to that by the element under examination is to be calculated, say, on a slide rule which is not only tedious and time consuming but may lead into error.
A method has been devised to simplify the procedure by making the light intensity adjustable with iris stop placed between the photometer and the dry plate. Thus if, by adjusting the light intensity, the galvanometer deflection by the element under examination is brought to a given fixed position on the scale, the deflection by the base metal gives at once the required intensity ratio.
Special feature of this outfit is:
(a) No calculation is needed for obtaining the intensity ratio.
(b) Easy manipulation because of iris adjustment of light intensity.
(c) Time saving.
