The determination of sulfur in heavy oils with vacuum type X-ray fluorescence analysis was investigated by using scattered X-rays as an internal standard. Some problems relating to the conditions of heavy oils liquid in vacuum are involved in this method. It was found that the bubbles in sample gave a serious influence on X-ray intensity. This may be attributed to the unevenness of sample surface and the thickness of Mylar foil varying with expansion of bubbles in vacuum. The Mylar foil, about 4 μ in thickness, absorbs about 28% of SKα radiation. The thickness of Mylar foil varied about 10% with expansion of bubbles in sample. <BR>The results indicated that by a use of scattered X-rays as an internal standard, it was possible to obtain better reproducibility, and that the use of a correction method was effective to reduce the influence of bubbles on the intensity.
