In spite of the recent rapid progress in gas chromatography, direct analysis of organic acids such as carboxylic acids still remains hard to be carried out. When a pretreatment such as esterification or trimethylsilylation is not applicable, it is usual to employ a column material containing phosphoric acid, .but this method is not sufficiently quantitiative.<BR>We tried to analyze such samples by G. S. C. with steam or steam-containing gas as a carrier gas, in order to improve separation and prevent tailing. The steam carrier adsorption gas chromatography was, however, not easy to be applied directly to conventional instruments with a difficulty in controlling the flow rate.<BR>We obtained satifsactory result by mixing steam to a certain extent in the carrier gas. The modification was simple : just a steam generator was attached to the flow line of a conventional gas chromatograph.<BR>In the experiment was used as packing material diatomaceous solid support baked with 1.8% H<SUB>3</SUB>PO<SUB>4</SUB> for the analysis of fatty acids from C<SUB>6</SUB> to C<SUB>18</SUB>, dicarboxylic acids, tricarboxylic acid and aromatic acids as analytical samples.
