This paper describes an improved method for the preparation of sample surface in the emission spectrometric analysis of steel. In course of routine analysis, a slight difference was found between the analytical results reported for production control and the re-analysis results obtained from the same sample newly ground the surface. An investigation on this problem revealed that the heat produced during the cut work by means of cutting wheel machines (regardless of dry or wet system) changes the structure of the sample surface appreciably and that thereby the analytical results are affected. This work points out that for more accurate analysis it is necessary to grind off a layer of about 0.3 mm from the tempered surface.
