An X-ray fluorescence technique has been applied to the determination of phosphorus and titanium in coke. Two sample-preparation methods have been investigated in this work. In the first method, an ashed sample of coke was spread on a base material, lime powder, and pressed to form a briquet sample. In the second method, a time consuming procedure of incinerating coke was omitted, and powdered coke was briquetted directly under a pressure of 20 tons/cm2 using stearic acid as a binder. The accuracy of these two methods was found to be comparable to that of conventional chemical methods. The use of the present methods, especially of the second, has appreciably reduced the time required for the analysis that is an important factor in production control.
