In the period 1953 to 1957 near the Tsuchitaru Station on the Joetsu Line, field experiments on sloping snow-pressure using individual poles were carried out to obtain some data on the snow pressure falling on such poles, its vertical distribution and sphere of its influence, etc. The pressure was 1.5-2 tons under a snow depth 2.5 m or thereabout at the slope inclined at 3235°. The patterns of vertical distribution included B. D. P. and other types. The sphere of influence extended over 33-35 m2, it was 16-20 m2 in the case of a buried pole. Based on these data, a tentative calculation formula for number density and pole works of avalanche protective plantation has been worked out.
