In the first report, preliminary notes on the mechanism of snow control are briefly discussed to help the reader in correct understanding of following experimental data of shelterbelt, These are vertical distribution of snow in the fully developed snow-storm, generation of snow-drift around obstacles standing on the snow cover, and both vegatational factors (width, height, crown density and height to the crown base) and meteorological ones (wind velocity and snow). Experiments of model shelterbelt in the wind tunnel are made by varing other factors except one under controllable condition.
In the second report, experimental studies which were carried on during the winter of 1952 -53 on the coast of Japan Sea in the northern district of Honshu are presented. Two experimental forests are used : one is the Snow Protection Forest of the Japanese National Railways (Japanese Ceder, 34 m. wide and 5m. high with crown density 0.63), and the other is sham forest consisting of 3m. boughs of Spruse with crown diameter 2m., struck into the ground at 2m. intervals (30m. wide with crown density 0.54). Measurements are made on a number of entities which seem to have a close relation with the snow drift prevention. Decrease of wind velocities both in the windward and vertical directions, accumulation of snow within and around the forest, equivalent depth of snow deposit after a snow-storm and drifting snow near the snow cover are present in this order.
Authors discuss that further studies must be required to clarify the mechanism of snow control and to decide the effect of shelterbelt. These subjects are statistical studies on the snow-storm, reasonable definition of the density of the forest and so on.
