• Observations of mass balance on Kongma Glacier (Glacier ED 020), Khumbu Himal (a small “debris-free” type glacier), were carried out during the period from September 1973 to September 1976. Variations of the balance curves at specific points were as follows. A positive balance occurs during the summer monsoon season, since accumulation is great due to monsoonal snowfall, although ablation occurs during this season. In winter, the change of the balance is small. A negative balance occurs during the pre-monsoon season. It can be said that the observations of superimposed ice were important in the mass balance study of glaciers in the Nepal Himalayas, since a large amount of surface melt water was stored as superimposed ice.<BR>The recent retreat and decrease of the ice thickness in the lower part of the glacier were interpreted from the pictures taken in 1970 and 1976. It is concluded that these phenomena were caused by the cessation of flow from the upper part of the glacier to the lower part.
