An extraordinary gale occured in the Khumbu region of the Nepal Himalayas on March 20, 1974. A maximum hourly mean speed of 25 m/s was recorded at Lhajung Station. The gale continued for half a day. It was probably a foehn wind from the Tibetan Plateau. The eastward movement of the subtropical jet stream associated with a blocking system over Kashimir, India, seems to have produced a northerly wind and this caused the sporadic gale in this area.
