Classification into types of the seasonal snow depth change for the period from 1955 to 1986 is studied using the precipitation and the surface temperature emphasizing the influence of general circulation change on snowfall and snow cover in Japan. Firstly, geographical distribution of occurrence frequency of the Types and climatological conditions for them are shown. Secondly, the change of occurrence frequency of the Types for the period of 1974 to 1986, warming of surface temperature in the Northern Hemisphere became remarkable while cooling was observed in Japan. The results are as follows:
1) The snow depth change in Japan for the period of 1955 to 1986 is classified into 6 Types. They are 1) Type S appearing under warm condition and frequently occurring in the coastal plain and basin areas, 2) Type E under wet condition and occurring in Hokuriku and Hida regions, 3) Type L under relatively cold and dry conditions and occurring in mountainous areas in Honshu and the eastern part of Hokkaido, 4) Type M with characteristics of both Types E and L and occurring in Tohoku, Joushin'etsu and west and central Hokkaido, 5) Type G under cold and moderate rainfall condition and occurring in Hokkaido, and 6) Type C under cold and little rainfall condition and distributed only in East of Hokkaido and Iwate Prefecture.
2) The occurrence frequency of each Type is investigated for the period from 1974 to 1986 during which cooling and dryness were observed in most of Japan. The frequency of Type S, appearing under warm condition is found to be decreased while that of Type G occurring under cold dondition increased because of cooling for 1974-1986. The frequency of Type E having tendency occurring under the wet condition, is found to be increased in the region where that of Type S were frequent before 1973 while decreased in other regions because of decreased rainfall. However, in Joushin'etsu region with increased precipitation for this period, frequency of Type E is found to be increas. Type L is found to be increased in the region where Type S were frequent before, while decreased in North of Japan and Joushin'etsu region.
