A series of preoperative Lp-CT (CT after transcatheter arterial embolization using Lipiodol and gelatin sponge: Lp-TAE) images, low-kilovoltage radiographs and histological findings were compared in 12 resected hepatocellular carcinomas after Lp-TAE to examine accumulation of Lipiodol in the main tumors and daughter nodules for evaluation of the effect of TAE. The LpCT images well reflected accumulation of Lipiodol in the main tumors as well as daughter nodules. Lipiodol was accumulated in high concentration within the main tumor in 4 cases of completely necrotized tumor and 5 cases of more than 95% necrotized tumor. In 2 cases, TAE did not demonstrate an anticipated effect, probably because of poor embolization. Lipiodol accumulation in the daughter nodules and the effect of TAE were confirmed. This verifies the usefulness of Lp-TAE for the diagnosis and surgical intervention in the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma.
