The isozymes of serum cholinesterase were studied in 18 normal subjects and 144 patients with liver diseases by polyacrylamide slab gel electrophoresis. Using acetylthiocholine iodide as substrate, abnormal bands in zymograms were frequently found in patients with liver cirrhosis and hepatoma. Abnormal bands were inhibited by the specific acetylcholinesterase inhibitors (Caffeine and Ambenonium) and absorbed away by addition of antihuman-erythrocyte membrane antibody, which contains an antibody against acetylcholinesterase. These results revealed that abnormal bands had properties of acetylcholinesterase. Abnormal bands were more frequently found in liver cirrhosis with history of ascites and hepatoma with liver cirrhosis. Activities of abnormal bands increased in decompensated liver cirrhosis and at the terminal stage of hepatoma and metastatic liver cancer.
