A Case of Peripheral-type Pulmonary Adenocarcinoma Diagnosed by Sputum Cytology after a Bronchoscopy.

An eighty-two-year-old male was admitted to our hospital for further examinations of abnormal shadow on the screening chest X-ray film. His chest roentgenogram and computed tomogram revealed a mass shadow in segment 4 of the left lung. Transbronchial lung biopsy (TBLB) and brushing cytology did not yield any definite diagnosis. However, sputum cytology on next day of TBLB gave a positive test for pulmonary carcinoma. We report this case, because it is not common to diagnose a peripheral-type pulmonary adenocarcinoma with sputum cytology.
