Production and localization of cellular fibronectin (cFN) during repairing process after liver damage (CCl4-treated rats) was investigated by immunohistochemical and molecular pathological techniques. cFN was produced by hepatocytes and non-parenchymal cells in normal liver. According to dot blot hybridization and in situ hybridization, cFN mRNA was strongly increased in 7 days' and 14 days' CCl4-treated livers. In addition, cFN was localized in non-parenchymal cells in fibrotic lesion and hepatocytes around it. These results suggest that cFN may play an important role in the construction of sinusodal wall and cell-to-cell interactions in normal liver and is associated with fibrosis after liver damage.
