58 patients with imported hepatitis were hospitalized at the Institute of Gastroenterology, Tokyo Women's Medical College during 1978-1982. Most patients (41 cases, 71.4%) had hepatitis A. B and Non-A, Non-B hepatitis accounted for 11 cases (19.6%) and 6 cases (8.9%) respectively. The age of the patients range from 10 to 60, mostly in their 20's (28 cases) and 30's (19 cases), and 5 were female. About 90% of them had stayed in South-East Asia or North Africa for some period shortly before or while the clinical symptoms presented. HBs Ag subtypes were adr (4 cases) and adw (6 cases), and had no ayr and ayw. 10 of hepatitis B patients had history of sexual contact with the foreign residents. Two of 58 patients were foreigners, one is Indian and another Chilean. Jaundice, fatigue, and anorexia were the most frequently initial symptoms. 9 of 41 hepatitis A patients prolonged for more than 90 days.
