1) Mice were infected with a non-virulent strain of Toxoplasma gondii, and after a period of 6 weeks to allow an immunity to develop, were challenged with the virulent RH strain.
2) The immune mice were examined for the presence of viable RH organisms in the peritoneal exudate, blood, and brain.
3) The blood, with but one exception, proved negative. The peritoneal exudate revealed trophozoites up to 1 week after the challenge, but thereafter became negative. The brain however proved positive for up to 7 weeks after the challenge, the limit of the present observations.
4) The persistence of virulent organism in the brain appears to be due to its intracellular location. The immune response engendered by the initial infection seems to be able only to suppress the multiplication of the parasite, not to eradicate it.
