Deaths of mice infected with the Beverley strain of Toxoplasma were concentrated in the period from 1 to 3 weeks after intraperitoneal inoculation. After 4 weeks of infection, the majority of infected mice harboring cysts in the brain survived actively for a long period. The cause of death was believed to be acute bronchopneumonia, sometimes combined with encephalitis. Small liver abscesses were often found sporadically in the parenchyma, and seemed not to be fatal. The other organs had no significant pathological lesions directly related to the deaths. Throughout the study, only a small number of tachyzoites was found even in the organs in which there were apparent lesions with large areas. Therefore, the destruction of organs in the mice was not caused by direct invasion of multiplied tachyzoites, but by side immune effects or other unknown factors since moribund mice were found to have a high positive antitoxoplasmic titer.
