A Meaning and Role of Telling a Cancer Patient his Diagnosis in Stoma Rehabilitation.

The relation between stoma rehabilitation and telling a cancer patient his diagnosis was studied. A questionnaire was submitted to major hospitals through mail. The respondents were 178 of 322 medical staffs and 150 of 329 nursing staffs.<BR>Thirty four percent of physicians and 43% of nurses indicated that it was not always necessary to tell the truth in direct expression when informing a diagnosis of cancer. The patients had been mentioned mainly their diagnosis in indirect and various expression. Seventy two percent of physicians and 61 % of nurses experienced no problem in patients following ostomy surgery without information. Sixty five percent of physicians and 54 % of nurses had pointed out a good acceptance of stoma after suggestion. Twenty nine percent of physicians and 43% of nurses answered that patients had good interests in stomal care. The advise on cancer was mostly performed at the time of operation, in 5% at stomal care following surgery. Fifty five percent of physicians and 59% of nurses mentioned that telling a cancer patient will be increase in future.<BR>We expect that the information of cancer will introduce participation to treatment, trust to staffs, and establishment of personality. We conclude that telling a cancer patient his diagnosis would be taken advantage in stoma rehabilitation.
