DNA ploidy and DNA index (DI) were determined in 40 colorectal carcinomas which developed synchronous or metachronous liver metastases and in 51 colorectal carcinomas which did not develop liver metastases for more than two years after curative surgery.<BR>DNA ploidy was diploid in 38, and aneuploid in 53 colorectal carcinomas. The incidence of DNA aneuploidy was significantly higher in colorectal carcinomas which developed synchronous or metachronous liver metastases. Among 53 colorectal carcinomas showing DNA aneu-ploidy, the mean value of DI was significantly higher in 28 tumors with synchronous or me-tachronous liver metastases, compared to 25 tumors which did not develop liver metastases. Tumor with DI of greater than 1.40 were found in those with synchronous or metachronous liver metastases with significantly higher incidence, compared to those without liver metastases. A multivariate analysis disclosed that the DI, lymph node metastases, depth of invasion, and vascular invasion correlated with development of liver metastases in the decreasing order.
