Clinical studies on pre- and post-operative immunological functions in colo-rectal cancers.

We investigated post operative immunological functions for the 86 patients with colorectal cancer. The resection of colon cancer caused the reduction of NK activity, PHA induced lymphoblastgenes is and the number of lymphocytes in the peripheral blood 7 days after the operation.<BR>Serum IAP was increased 7 post operative days. These values were recovered to preoperative level 1 month after the operation.<BR>In rectal cancer, the immunological functions were impaired 7 days after the operation rather than those in colon cancer patients. There are some immunological parameters those did not go back to a preoperative level 1 month after the operation, presumably because of the complications with resection of the rectal cancer. The more advanced cancer caused the more impaired immunological functions. The cases of Dukes B and C had lower levels of these immunological parameters than Dukes A both 7 days and 1 month after the operation. Also the patients who had the recurrence had the disturbance of immunological functions 7 days and 1 month after the operation compared to the patients who had no recurrence, particulary the number of lymphocytes and PHA induced lymphoblastgenesis were impaired.<BR>These observation suggested that immunological therapy was very important for the patients with colo-rectal cancer after the operation to prevent the immunological disorder.
