Staining rectal mucin by periodic Acid-Thionin Schiff/Potassium Hydroxide/Periodic Acid-Schiff (PAT/KOH/PAS) procedure as a method of second screening of large bowel cancer.

Culling reported that colon lesions were diagnosed by staining colonic mucin by Periodic Acid-Thionin Schiff/Potassium Hydroxide/Periodic Acid-Schiff (PAT/KOH/PAS : PKP) procedure. We used symptom questionnaires and Hemoccult II test kits as the first screening of large bowel cancer patients and utilized PAT/KOH/PAS procedure as the second method.<BR>Two thousand one hundred and seventy six patients over 35 yeprs old underwent examination of faecal occult blood by Hemoccult II kits and symptom questionnaires. One handed and sixty nine patients of them were necessary to have further examination and as the second screening of rectal mucin were stained by PAT/KOH/PAS procedure. Their stains were judged positive in all of 2 colon cancer and 4 colon polyp patients and 9 of 13 diverticulosis patient, whereas feacal occult blood test was positive in 2 colon cancer patients, 1 polyp patients and 3 patients of 13 diverticulosis patients.
