3. Scanning Electron Microscopic Studies of the Ulcerative Colitis in Comparison with Normal Large Bowels

The mucous membrane of normal human large bowels and ulcerative colitis have been studied by the scanning electron microscope and obtained the following results. In the normal specimens, the shapes of colonic area are irregular. However, their alignments and each interspaces are regular. The crypt orifices have shown similar circle shape and equal size. The shapes of epithelium cell and goblet cell are hexagonal or polygonal. Microvillis have been observed likewise the gravel. The grades of ulcerative colitis were classified by scanning electron microscopy as follows.<BR>Grade 1 : The shapes of colonic area are slightly irregular. Crypt orifices show round or oval shape and regular size. Their alignments and each interspaces are nearly normal.<BR>Grade 2:The shapes of colonic area become irregular mederately. The shapes of crypt are various and their sizes are irregular slightly. Moreover, their alignments and interspaces reveal slight irregularities.<BR>Grade 3:The distinction of each colonic areas are diffcult moderately. The sizes, alignments, and interspaces show remarkable varieties.<BR>Grade 4:The colonic areas become undistinguishable. Furthermore, the cryps ori-fices are transformed in the chink, crater or other shapes. Their size show no similarity. The alignments and interspaces are irregular and wide respectively. Microvillis are low in height and scattered.
