There are many papers on studies of the electrical activity of the colon in the litera-ture, but there is not of a clear description of the relationship between electrical activity and intrinsic plexuses in the colon up to, the present.
The electrical activity were studied in the lower colon of the dog with induced dege-nerated intramural plexuses by modified ischemic procedure or dividing of the pelvic nerves in this paper.
The spike burst waves of the colon were discharged frequently after the modified ischemic procedure, and this phenomena have been proved only during two weeks after the dividing of the pelvic nerves.
On the other hand, by the dividing of the pelvic nerves, these spike burst waves were hardly recognized two weeks later, and no changes occured even by Acetylcholine administration.
Histopathological studies revealed oligoganglionosis only in Auerbach's plexus but not in Meissner's plexus after modified ischemic procedure. On the contrary, oligoganglionosis were shown in both of Auerbach's and Meissner's plexuses after the dividing of the pelvic nerves.
Considering above results, it was suggested that the Meissner's plexuses make a very important role in the generation of the spike burst waves of the colon.
