2. A Case of Actinomycosis of the Colon

A 29-year-old housewife was admitted with compleints of pain and a painful mass in the left lower quardrant of abdomen.<BR>A double contrast barium enema study showed marked narrowing of the distal segment of the discending colon with irregular margin and gradual transition to adjacent normal bowel. Nodularity of the mucosa without ulceration was shown. A inflammatory lesion was suggested, although roentgenological findings simulated linitis plastica carcinoma.<BR>Macroscopically the excised specimen showed marked thickening and rigidity of the wall. Histopathologically, in two of 31 sections in whole specimen surfur granules were seen, which actinomycosis was diagnosed.
