A Clinicopathological Study on the Syphilitic Aortic Regurgitation in the Aged

• Syphilitic aortic regurgitation was found in 26 cases (2.6%) out of serial 1, 000 autopsies in the aged more than 60 years of age. There were 18 men and 8 women. Chest X-ray films and electrocardiograms revealed left ventricular enlargement in most cases and dilatation of the ascending aorta was accompanied by calcification. Eighteen cases (69%) died of cardiac death, such as sudden death or congestive heart failure. Morphological examination disclosed aortic ring dilatation in 11 cases (42%), which formed a group with hypertrophied heart. Twelve cases (46%) had commissural separation without ring dilatation and their heart weight was less than the former. Coronary ostial stenosis was seen in 11 cases (42%) and 6 of them developed myocardial infarction. Aneurysm of the ascending aorta was noticed in 6 cases (23%).
