At first the brittleness and flaky behavior of the white layers formed at surface side in the gas nitrided cases of nitriding steel articles are described and discussed. The origins and mechanism for these properties are supposed. The ε-iron nitride phase of a certain superlattice structure with the maximum equilibrium content of nitrogen can be easily formed. This ε-phase may change partially into the ζ-iron nitridephase of a similar structure with the higher nitrogen content during slow cooling from nitriding temperature under a very high partial pressure of ammonia gas. The Griffith cracks may be thought to generate at ε-ζ common cleavege planes because of anisotropic expansion.Secondly the compositions, structures and properties of the compound layers in the soft nitrided cases are reviewed. While the γ'-phases are thought to be ductile and high work hardenable, good wear resistance of the ε+γ'+θ mixed phases may be contributed to a dispersion-strengthening effect of cementite.
