For the purpose of improving the yield of chromium at stainless steel melting in arc furnace, the effect of chromium oxidation at melt-down period on the yield of chromium has been studied.From the experiment by 15t and 2t arc furnace, the following results were obtained.(1) Chromium oxidation at melt-down period was found to be very effective to the yield of chromium.(2) Chromium concentration in slag at melt-down period is shown to depend on the chromium and silicon contents of the metal and, also, the basicity of the slag.(3) The addition of 10kg/ch·t silicon and 15kg/ch·t CaO at melt-down period may be optimum to lower the amount of oxidized chromium at melt-down period and the yield of chromium in the several examined conditions.
