By using a plasma furnace whose lining is MgO and the inside diameter is 170φ, the experiment was performed to eliminate carbon and nitrogen in molten Fe-26Cr-1Mo steel. Various experimental conditions were examined.During the experimental period (less than 150min), the concentrations of carbon and nitrogen became from 0.5% to less than 0.002% and from 0.03% to less than 0.010%, respectively. It is suggested that high-chromium ferritic stainless steel with the lowest impurity content ([C]+[N]≤0.0150%) may be produced successfully by a plasma furnace as well as an electron-beam furnace.
