For the construction of a tea-leaf sorting machine, the floating speed of tea leaves was measured and some sorting experiments of tea leaves were carried out in which the leaf fragments were eliminated by the force of wind.
The results of the eiperiments were sum-marized as follows:
1. The floating speed of tea leaves was measured by blowing the wind from the bottom of a virtical glass cylinder. It was different in the different part of shoot and generally ranged from 3m./sec. to 8m./sec.
2. The leaf-sorting tests with a virtical wind-sorting apparatus showed the following results.
(1) The air speed had a great effect upon the sorting rate when the air velocity became higher, the sorting rate of leaf fragments increased, on the other hand, the whole leaves were also more eliminater.
(2) when the sample weight per unit area increased, the sorting rate of leaf fragments decreased.
(3) The sorting time and replication made the sorting rate of leaf fragments better.
